I drove my 27-foot motor home and tow car over Beartooth Highway and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway this day.
On Beartooth, wind pounded and it snowed(!) and hailed(!) in August(!), and I was teary most of the time because the scenery was so eerily beautiful and I was so present to both my privilege and bravery. I thought about my friends and family a lot, and felt them keeping me safe and being excited about this twist… as it were!
Lower-altitude Chief Joseph was easier by comparison, but I got weepy there, too, seeing the gorgeous scenery through the eyes of indigenous people driven from this land years ago.
