Like many states, Virginia has several fairly distinct regions. Alexandria is a suburb of Washington, DC and in fact, used to be within the boundaries of the District of Columbia. The Leesburg area, 40 miles away from Washington, was primarily farmland and small towns until recently. My friend Beth says it has grown enormously in the last decade, and is full of coffee shops and breweries. I saw plenty of enormous new suburban homes. And the evening traffic headed west on the little two-way country roads was bumper to bumper.

- Virginia Theological Seminary, where my father got his Master of Divinity degree. The chapel burned down in 2010, and VTS made a wonderful decision to keep key parts of the building standing, creating an open-area Chapel Garden.
