Even though I grew up in the two Carolinas, I haven’t lived here since I left to go to college. I have come to visit consistently, but had still seen relatively little of my home state as an adult. This trip up to Boone and back was a start!

- Linville Caverns used to be full of bats, but we only saw one when we were there. The guide told us that bats have been dying in the millions in North America of white-nose syndrome, a fungus. I also didn’t realized that bats are pollinators, so that’s another impact along with the widespread deaths of bees and butterflies. : (
